One of the best things about Puerto Rico is that you can enjoy a boat day almost any time of year. The water around Fajardo stays warm in every season, and the islands of Icacos and Palomino are only about 20 minutes from the marina. Still, each season feels a little different on the water, so here is what to expect and how to pick the right time for your trip.
The short answer
- Best overall: December to April. Comfortable temperatures, the least rain of the year from February to April, and our busiest season.
- Warmest water: May to October. Sea temperatures reach the low to mid 80s °F, with more frequent, usually short tropical showers.
- Plan carefully: August to October. This is the peak of hurricane season, so flexible plans are important.
December to April: peak season
Winter and spring are the most popular time for a boat trip in Puerto Rico, and for good reason. Daytime highs in Fajardo sit around 79–82 °F, and the sea stays near 79–81 °F, warm enough to swim all day. February through April are typically the driest months of the year.
Winter can be breezier, so on some days the captain may choose the more sheltered of our islands. This is also our busiest time, especially on weekends, so book early if you have specific dates in mind, particularly for our larger yachts.
May to July: warm water, fewer crowds
Early summer brings warmer air (around 82–84 °F) and warmer water (around 81–82 °F). Rain becomes more frequent, but on Puerto Rico's east coast most showers come fast and leave fast, often clearing within minutes. With the winter crowds gone, this can be a great time to enjoy the islands at a slower pace.
August to October: hurricane season peak
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most activity usually from August through October. Most days during these months are still sunny and hot, and the water is at its warmest, about 84 °F in September and October. If you travel during this window, keep your plans flexible and watch the forecast.
Your safety always comes first: only the captain can cancel a trip, and if the captain decides the weather is dangerous or not appropriate to go out, the trip is cancelled and your deposit is refunded.
November: the shoulder month
November is a transition month as hurricane season winds down and temperatures ease. It is a good time to plan and book ahead for the winter season, when the best dates fill up first.

Tips for the best boat day in any season
- Book weekdays if you can. Weekends fill first, especially in peak season.
- Trust the captain's call on the island. Each morning we check the wind and ocean swells and choose between Icacos and Palomino based on where the water will be calmest and clearest. Not sure which you would prefer? Read our Icacos vs. Palomino guide.
- Consider a sunset trip. Evenings are cooler and beautiful in every season. See our private sunset cruises.
- Save Culebra and Vieques for calm days. These farther islands are best when seas are flat. Learn about Culebra charters and Vieques boat trips.
